“Bravery generates hope. Without hope, we live in quiet, or not so quiet, despair.” -Kathy Caprino
It has come up a few times recently – someone asking with a sense of despair, desperation, frustration, and even cynicism – is recovering from complex/developmental trauma even possible?!!
Even EMDR therapy – which I see amazing results with – is a long road. There is so much unwinding – so much rebuilding – to be done!!
And before people get to my door, they have often tried so many other things – years of talk therapy, meds, groups, CBT, DBT, and even other EMDR therapy that hasn’t been careful or comprehensive.
It’s not to say these things haven’t been helpful (although some HAVE been harmful) – but they for sure haven’t been enough!
They haven’t restored the attachment system to a sense of security. They haven’t allowed the layers of trauma to finally heal by transforming how the memories are stored in the brain.
The refusal to give up hope – to try one more thing – to fight against the discouragement of prior stunted efforts at healing – to keep coming back to another EMDR session when the work seems to move inch by inch – this is brave.
This is why I refer to you as Lionhearts.

Thank you to Kathy Caprino at Ellia Communications for the powerful words!
The Course covers many of the elements that can make a world of difference in treating complex/developmental trauma with EMDR therapy. While it is not therapy – it is designed to supplement therapy in a powerful way!
