“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” – Carl Jung
It’s possible to keep clipping their leaves and pruning their branches, but the weeds will just keep sprouting up and taking over.
Pulling them out by the root is the only way to actually create lasting change.
It’s the same with the negative, distorted beliefs we have about ourselves – and the harmful behaviors we originally adopted when they were the very best options we had in powerless and painful circumstances.
I think Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) are some of the very best weed whackers around!! And, in fact, sometimes they’re absolutely necessary for stabilization – to clear enough of the chaos and reactivity so that it can be possible to get to the roots!
But get to the roots we must!
And EMDR therapy is root therapy!!
It allows us to find and heal the experiences in which we originally made the distorted conclusions about ourselves and learned to cope in the ways that now seem to only cause us more pain.
With the roots taken care of, we can turn our attention to growing more flowers rather than cutting back the same old weeds again and again!!
I’m curious to hear your thoughts and experiences with this!!
