“Nothing is permanent in this world, not even your troubles.” – Charlie Chaplin
Charlie Chaplin is right!! The hard times don’t last forever. But, it can seem like they do.
When the brain hasn’t been able to process through the pain or fear of an experience, the past can continue to FEEL very much like it’s still present.
The Here and Now gets lost in the There and Then.
When this is the case, it is because memory has become neurologically stuck – isolated away from the information that would tell the nervous system “that danger is over – what happened doesn’t make you unloveable, unforgivable, or unworthy.”
EMDR therapy unlocks the memory so it can process through. It allows the awful feelings to be released and the what is true to finally feel real.
It allows the troubles of the past to be left in the past, so it is possible to live fully in the present!!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on Chaplin’s wisdom – or your experiences and questions about EMDR therapy!
