“The mind replays what the heart can’t delete.” -Yasmin Mogahed
PTSD by definition means being trapped in the endless loop of what happened as it replays itself in cutting shards of memory, piercing emotions, and beliefs that shatter the core of the self.
So of course, we do anything we can muster to not feel the depth of the cuts – to steel ourselves – to numb the reality – to insulate ourselves from risk of returning there again.
What a ridiculous-seeming choice an invitation to EMDR therapy can be – to be asked to lean in and trust that the brain can heal if given the right conditions, to look straight with eyes wide open at the memories, to feel the pain again as it sears through the heart and the body – but all with the faith that it will be released this time and the replaying and replaying and replaying will end.
It tears me up to see how hard of a choice this is sometimes – and that sometimes it is just asking too much for someone to believe such healing is possible.
I welcome hearing your thoughts and if you resonate with this.
