“At the core of everyone there is a solemn struggle of the human heart’s perpetual choice to build one of three things: walls, roots, or wings.” -Michael Xavier
Walls, roots, and wings.
I agree – we have an instinctual drive for each of these. And all three can either take healthy, adaptive forms or serve defensive, maladaptive functions.
Are the walls boundaries of self-respect? Or are they barriers that protect against the vulnerability of connection?
Do the roots ground us in a place of belonging and nurture that allows us to flourish? Or do they limit our movement and forward momentum?
Are the wings our source of power and freedom to pursue a life we desire and deserve? Or are they a means we use to escape what is hard – rather than bravely face and feel all that we must to truly be healthy and free?!
How does this resonate with you? Have your walls, roots, wings evolved over time? Is there a way you would like these instincts to transform so they would serve you better? I would love to hear!
Thank you to Michael Xavier for these words.
